Skincare Basics
Cleanse
Exfoliate
Moisturize
Every skincare routine should consist of 3 basic components. Cleanse. Exfoliate. Moisturize. Starting with these 3 basics will help maintain the health of your skin regardless of your concerns. Keep this in mind as you read along about how to build a skincare routine tailormade for YOUR skin type.
We’ll also discuss the benefits of specific skincare treatments but it’s important to know that no treatment will truly be successful without a good basic routine. I recommend that everyone has a daily and weekly morning and evening routine. Your morning routine should be the simplest of the two while managing your skin type (we’ll go over that shortly).
Cleanse
Cleansing your skin is the first line of defense when maintaining its health. We go through the day coming in contact with all kinds of particles and bacteria and many of us the first thing we do is take a shower to wash the day off, but what about your face. Making sure you cleanse your face will not only be refreshing but also set a foundation for how your skin will look whether you struggle with acne or aging.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating is the process of sloughing off the top layer of skin, removing dead skin, particles, and bacteria that has built up over time. And no, this should not leave you raw and pink afterwards. As a professional, regardless of the skin type, my goal is to use the most gentle and effective exfoliation method for the best results and I can assure you it’s not supposed to hurt, especially when done at home! Incorporating a weekly exfoliation step on a day of your choosing will bring new life to your skin. Once your skin builds up a tolerance you can increase the frequency. This is the step that will start the process of having clear even skin. Just make sure to not overdo it or you’ll make things worse.
Moisturize
And last but most certainly not least (you’ll see this phrase a lot, sorry), you gotta seal it all in. You’ve cleaned away the dirt and day, exfoliated the dead skin away and now it’s time to secure the bag (the skin health bag, of course). Each step of your skincare routine should be tailored to your skin type but this one is important for making sure the first two steps weren’t a waste of time, money, and effort. Your moisturizer should replenish missing nutrients and restore the protective barrier that was manipulated when cleansing and exfoliating. The moisturizer is the star of your skincare basic routine and for good reason.
Building Your Personal Skincare Routine
There could be up to 5 steps in your skincare routine:
Cleanse
Exfoliate
Treat
Moisturize
Protect
Each step has its own special purpose and will likely be followed in the order above. This is important to remember when looking for and buying products. First you must identify what is the purpose of the product to determine where it would best fit in your routine.
It’s time to talk about the different product types that are formulated for all of the different skin types. It’s easy to get caught up in the “hype of the social media” when looking for the best skincare products to achieve (insert trend) but is it really the best one for you??
This is what you should ask yourself before throwing all of your hard earned money at trends that could simply not work or make things worse.
There are so many different products, etc, etc, that it can be overwhelming to find the right one for you. This is where the trusted professional is gonna come in and hopefully make it all make a little more sense for you.
As we go through the different skin care products I will be suggesting products that I have tried and found to work really well, especially on melanated skin. As a licensed esthetician I am partnered with Skin Script and Esthemax which are professional skincare lines only offered by skincare professionals. I have tried many different professional lines, and I trust Skin Script because it has been the most inclusive, gentle and effective skincare line I’ve used in my career. I encourage you to do your own research as there are many great products available but I also offer most (if not all of those suggested in this e-book on my website).
